The first band was pretty awesome. Also effing hilarious, it was this flamboyant man wearing tight shiny silver pants. So we made our way pretty much to the front of the crowd, then they switched bands and I got Surprise Moshpitted, I will now always check to see if any bands are prone to causing mosh pits from now on. I hate moshpits when i expect them, I hate them even more when I'm holding my drink and my lady friends drink and get smashed all over the place, spilling beer on everyone.

Part of the reason I wasn't expecting it all is because the first band was the last thing that would cause a mosh pit.

Hard to say what bands will cause it, some punk-rock bands even have 'mosh pits' of sorts where similar could occur out of nowhere.

A good mosh pit is pretty awesome and safe but it's certainly not a place for everyone, I will forever remember fondly being in the circle pits at One Minute Silence shows, or watching the 'Wall of Death' at a Lamb of God set from upstairs standing.

Trying to avoid a hectic crowd, I generally go by the rule of being right at the front, preferably on the barrier. Or to the side of the stage, in front of the PA. The mosh pits or frantic crowd activity tend to occur directly in front of the stage, a few people back from the barrier. If it's a larger gig, all bets are off but then you probably would know beforehand if a band was likely to.
